Which stainless steel for a spa ?

There are different corrosion resistance properties associated with different grades of stainless steel. Stainless steel materials are protected with the invisible layer of chromium oxide which makes them stain and corrosion resistant. There are many stainless steel references. But then which stainless steel to choose for your spa?

316L stainless steel:

316L stainless steel is certainly the material that best resists corrosion and the consequences of time on your spa. In addition, it is solid, durable and above all recyclable. It is the steel that is generally used in boating, in seaside constructions and in chemical or industrial installations.

Also, opting for a 316L stainless steel spa means choosing the best material with the greatest longevity.

This is why Linoxydable offers pools and spas made of 100% 316L stainless steel (known as Marine Quality). The parts in contact with water as the structural parts are made with the same stainless steel.

304L stainless steel:

304L stainless steel is generally used in kitchens and in food processing plants. Its composition corresponds to the standards in force and offers good resistance to corrosion.

Difference between 316L stainless steel and 304L stainless steel:

Composition difference: 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum. Molybdenum is a chemical element used for strengthening and hardening steel. Its main function in 316 stainless steel is to help fight chloride corrosion.

316 stainless steel contains more nickel than 304 stainless steel, while 304 contains more chromium than 316. 304 stainless steel is typically 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 316 stainless steel is composed of 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum.

Price difference: 316L stainless steel is more expensive than 304L stainless steel.

Conclusion :

In conclusion, 316L stainless steel can generally replace 304L but the reverse is not possible. In this case, only 316L stainless steel should be used for the walls of a stainless steel pool.

Some pool builders have therefore opted for a combination of the two with 316L stainless steel walls associated with a 304L stainless steel structure.

Linoxydable has chosen to build its spas and swimming pools exclusively in 316L stainless steel. (structure and walls).
